Announcement Detail
The Gabor Kaley Memorial Lectureship Award
The annual Gabor Kaley Lectureship Award is a joint initiative of the Microcirculatory Society (MCS) and the Cardiovascular Section (CVS) of the American Physiological Society (APS). The Gabor Kaley Memorial Lectureship Award recognizes an outstanding contributor to the field of microcirculatory physiology/pathophysiology, who is noted for the quality of his/her research and who has demonstrated commitment to the development and training of junior scientists.
The Gabor Kaley Memorial Lectureship Award is named in honor of Dr. Gabor Kaley, who devoted his professional career equally to two pursuits: advancing microcirculatory research and development and training of young scientists, encouraging them to investigate important problems in microvascular physiology and pathophysiology. Dr. Kaley published more than 200 articles, including a seminal article that lead to the discovery of the biological role of prostaglandins. He has trained numerous leaders in the field of microcirculatory research. He and his disciples made invaluable scientific contributions to the fields of vascular regulation and microcirculation, including but not limited to, enhancing our understanding of the role of prostaglandins, nitric oxide, and mechanotransduction of pressure and shear stress in the physiologic and pathologic control of the microcirculation.
Awardees of the Lectureship receive travel expenses (up to $2,000) to attend Experimental Biology, complementary registration for Experimenatal Biology, a $1,000 honorarium and a framed certificate commemorating the Award. The award is presented at the annual meeting of the MCS and APS at Experimental Biology, and the awardee is invited to present a one hour featured lecture on his/her research followed by short presentations by trainees or early career investigators on related topics. The awardee is expected to publish his/her formal lecture in the American Journal of Physiology - Heart and Circulatory Physiology as a 'Highlighted Manuscript'.
Establishment & Support
This lectureship was endowed in 2014 by a generous donation by the family of Dr. Kaley.
Rules & Eligibility
Nominations are open to anyone doing research in the field of Microvascular Physiology and Pathophysiology. Although desirable, membership in MCS and/or APS/Cardiovascular Section is not required. The lectureship shall be for outstanding contributions to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge of Microvascular Physiology and Pathophysiology. Demonstrated commitment to development and training of junior scientists also is important. Nominations are active for three years.
Nomination & Selection Process
Deadline: Friday, May 26, 2017
The nomination package must include:
· A formal nomination letter emphasizing the qualifications of the nominee.
· A current Curriculum Vitae.
· Up to two seconding letters.
· A list of up to 5 recent papers (with PMIDs) highlighting the nominee's recent research.
Emphasis should be on the nominee's recent work on Microvascular Physiology and Pathophysiology. The nominator does not have to be a MCS or APS member. Anyone, except members of the selection committee, may submit one nomination or one seconding letter for the Gabor Kaley Lectureship Award in any given year. Self-nominations are not accepted. Please do not nominate a person for the same work or achievements for which they have already received a MCS or APS Society level award.
